Strangely enough, the Soul Reaper doesn't spawn where its summoning item is used. Walking up onto the altar while the Hallow Essence is in the player's inventory will summon the Soul Reaper. The Hallow Essence can then be used on the altar with blue flames right next to the graveyard that has the Death King and the Gravestone. Getting it from the Death King through a Random Surprise.Finding the Gravestone NPC at the Haunted Castle and praying.Fans of The Poppy War and Kristin Cashore will definitely be pleased, I think. To summon the Soul Reaper, the player needs a Hallow Essence, which can be obtained in two ways. If you’re looking for something that balances a brutal storyline with some great characters, then I definitely recommend picking it up. Year of the Reaper is not your typical YA fantasy, and I really enjoyed stepping outside some of the tropes and reading something that felt as unusual and fresh as this. Suffice to say that you’ll be sitting on the edge of your seat! I wish I could tell you about some of the fantastic turns the story takes, but believe me, this is one you want to go into knowing as little as possible. I think this would be a super interesting reread to pick up on all the hints you might have missed! While I won’t say I necessarily liked many of them, the characters are all compelling and believable, which makes the unfolding of the plot really hit home nicely. I really wasn’t expecting the plot to unfold the way it did – it’s a very clever mystery and one that’s woven into the book from the very start if you know what to look for. That being said, the tight focus of the book kept me very engaged, and I raced through this in one sitting. If Makiia Lucier ever writes an adult epic, I’ll be all over it! I love that this was a sub-350-page standalone fantasy, because we absolutely need more of those, but it could absolutely have been a 600 page epic, or a series, if the pace slowed down and there was more complexity allowed to develop. As it stands, I enjoyed it very much, but I wanted a little more depth to the city, to the statecraft, to the effects of the plague on the populace – I wanted to spend more time in the world and see how it functioned. At times while reading, I wished this was an adult book, because I would have been so happy to spend that much more time and energy getting to grips with the fascinating world. The book is very focused on Cas and his hunt for the killer, and that keeps the tension high and the pace quick, but I felt there were times where the worldbuilding could have been delved into even more a couple of things were glossed over that I would have loved to be explained more to understand the culture of the city. In fact, this reads more like a historical novel, but one set in a country which doesn’t exist – the general style reminded me a lot of a YA version of Guy Gavriel Kay’s fantasy, which often has this historical tone. There’s very little magic, which is not always my thing in fantasy, but it works well here because the focus is kept squarely on the people involved and stakes which are personal, rather than world-changing. #REAPER UNFOLDER FULL#This is a pretty dark book, one that takes place in a broken country and follows a broken young man as he tries to hunt down a killer in a court full of suspicion, but it’s not a depressing read rather, it’s one that acknowledges darkness but is very aware of human nature. You can probably tell from that hefty list of content warnings above that this is not a fluffy fantasy romp. They must look to the past, following the trail of a terrible secret-one that could threaten the kingdom’s newfound peace and plunge it back into war. Cas and Lena soon realize that who is behind the attacks is far less important than why. When an assassin targets those closest to the queen, Cas is drawn into a search for a killer…one that leads him to form an unexpected bond with a brilliant young historian named Lena. And they have brought their enemies with them. His castle has become a refuge for the royal court. Three years later, Cas wants only to return to his home in the mountains and forget past horrors. But when plague sweeps over the land, leaving countless dead and devastating the kingdom, even Cas’ title cannot save him from a rotting prison cell and a merciless sickness. All opinions my own.Ĭontent warnings: Plague/disease (with graphic description of symptoms) violence, injury and death, including amputation and death by burning implied torture medical experimentation/vivisection, including on reproductive organs injury and death of animals, including rabies child starvation and neglect PTSD grief.īefore an ambush by enemy soldiers, Lord Cassia was an engineer’s apprentice on a mission entrusted by the king. #REAPER UNFOLDER FREE#Ownership: Review copy sent free of charge by Hodder Books.
